The Dogs Trust Comes To Great Wood

On Thursday 21st March we were lucky enough to be visited by the Dog’s Trust.  Representatives from the Dog’s Trust held science-based workshops, for our KS2 children, which took them back in time, to explore how dogs evolved into our much loved family pets. Our children discovered  many types of different breeds and types of dog and reflected on animal welfare and how we care for our dogs.  Our children were taught about responsible dog ownership and what dogs need. The experience was interactive, with discussions, quizzes and role play activities.

Great Wood Primary Host New Exciting JCB Project

Great Wood Primary have taken part in an exciting new project that is encouraging pupils to become the engineers of the future.

Year 5 and 6 pupils worked to construct a variety of machines learning about gears, levers and pulleys. As part of the visit, George Bamford of JCB, came along to experience the learning outcomes and see first hand how the practical elements from the JCB Junior Innovators Learning Packs are having. The pupils were full of praise for the activity, Alyssa, aged 10, “it was fun and interesting, however, it was challenging to make all the parts work together”. Jake Booth, aged 9,  “it was cool to see how the wooden cranes worked and I would love to be a mechanic when I am older”.

The morning was organised by Stuart Harper who was pleased with the pupils reactions to the machines, “it is rewarding to see all the preparation and planning come to fruition when you see the pupils engaging with the equipment and using their initiative to solve challenges and problems”.

Overall it was a positive and productive morning, encouraging pupils to look at engineering as an engaging and exciting career.

Remembering Mr Michael Bradbury

Remembering Mr Michael Bradbury

In January we were greatly saddened to hear the news that our lovely caretaker, Michael Bradbury, had passed away.

Michael always did a fabulous job in keeping our school in good working order and safe, but, more important than that, he was a wonderful person and a much-loved part of our team. A number of our staff were honoured to attend Michael’s funeral and were humbled to hear how much Great Wood Primary meant to him and that he loved being part of our team – just as we loved him being part of it too.

We send love and prayers to Michael’s family in the UK and Australia and know that his memory will live on.

Rest in peace, our friend.
