Bouncing our way to friendship and fun!

Each of the five sister schools within TMPF were delighted to join friends from Cheadle Primary School and participate in a basketball event staged by The Cheadle Academy (TCA).
Four boys and four girls took part in the celebration of sport, which began with a skills session and concluded with an exciting tournament.
Throughout the morning, every child had a chance to develop their understanding of the game and play competitively against one another. It was a great opportunity to make friends and try a new sport… whilst maybe beginning a journey towards the NBA!
The closely-fought event was eventually won by our TMPF friends at St. Werburgh's C.E. (A) Primary. Congratulations to all who took part and to Mrs Evans and the wonderful Sports Leaders from TCA who led the event and doubled up as coaches.

Festive Feast for Royal British Legion

Great Wood Primary School hosted a special Christmas treat for members of the Tean branch of the Royal British Legion.

Guests enjoyed watching the Nativity and seeing the children perform all of their songs and dances. After the performance, the guests were treated to a fabulous Christmas feast, in which the older pupils served food and drinks to our visitors. A brilliant time was had by all.

One of our lovely guests said, “The children were marvellous and the school should be very proud of them, you can see the hard work that has gone into the show’.

Organised by Mark Hatcher from the local Methodist Church, Suzy Senior joined the boys and girls for an afternoon of dancing, singing and wonderful storytelling and even took the time to sign copies of her books.

Ben L. (Y6), said, “It was very educational and I now know what it takes to write a book and how it is published”.

Great Wood host Royal British Legion 'Poppy Party'

Great Wood Primary School was happy to host the Royal British Legion 'Poppy Party' on 24th November.

Pupils led the remembrance service which was beautifully observed by all. The evening celebrates all the hard work completed by Royal British Legion (RBL) members and celebrates their achievements. As part of the ceremony, our school received an award for ‘The best decorated school’ which was judged by officials from the RBL. The pupils were very proud of this achievement, Grace (Y6) said, ‘It is lovely to see that they enjoyed seeing our letters and research on the local people who were involved with World War One’. The school also received a 'thank you' card for the money raised for the poppy appeal, a sum of £160.

The Great Wood Primary School family are very proud to work so closely with the Royal British Legion.

Great Wood Honours Heroic Former Pupil

Great Wood Primary School pupils were honoured to pay their respects to a former pupil killed in World War I, at a special event at JCB World Headquarters.

Private Arthur Rowe, who attended the school more than 120 years ago, is one of 50 brave servicemen honoured on a new montage at JCB.

Private Rowe was injured on the battlefield at Passchendaele in October 1917 and lay there for three days in the cold and rain before being rescued and taken to a field-hospital in France where he sadly died of his injuries on 16th October 1917.

Pupils visited JCB’s World HQ to see the special commemoration of Private Rowe. During the visit they heard the story of the brave soldier’s army service from his great grandson Dave Atkinson and his great-great grandson Jack Atkinson, who both work at JCB.

Jack and Dave also presented the school with a framed photo of Private Rowe to ensure his memory lives on at the school. Pupils later laid a wreath at Tean War Memorial where Private Rowe is also commemorated.

School Leader, Ben Adamson, said: “We are amazed and very humbled to hear that one of our former pupils served his country with such distinction in the First World War and are thrilled to be presented with his picture. It’s really very poignant to learn about Private Rowe at the Centenary of the Armistice. We will ensure that he is never forgotten and his picture will hang in the school – his school - with pride.”

Great Wood Remembers

Pupils at Great Wood Primary School took part in the Remembrance Service on the 11.11.18 as part of the community who remembered those who fought in the Great War.

Our School Captains laid a wreath on both the war memorials in Tean and read out poems during the church service. The poems had been based on the forgotten names on the war memorial, including Arthur Rowe, a former Great Wood pupil. The school hosted the refreshments after the service in which visitors could see the displays the pupils had prepared to showcase their learning of the centenary of the end of World War I.

The Royal British Legion joined us and were thankful of the fundraising the pupils had supported this year.
