Grace Ansell, whose grandad is currently having treatment at Douglas Macmillan, wanted to do some fundraising and came up with an idea with her friends. Over the last couple of weeks they have been holding a raffle with prizes that have been donated by themselves. They have raised an amazing £106.21. Wow! Grace said “I didn’t believe we could raise so much money, I want to thank my friends for helping and to all those that have given so generously”.

At the CADSSA Y5/6 swimming gala our Great Wood team performed brilliantly. There were individual successes and fab team work in the relay races. The school was ably supported by our parents who cheered along all morning. The children did themselves very proud and were pleased with the final results. The girls did fantastically coming sixth, the boys achieved an amazing second place which meant overall we can fifth, leading the celebrations for all our friends across the MAT. Well done swimmers!

Great Wood are the very proud winners of the CADSSA Y5/6 Tag Rugby Tournament held at our friends St. Werburghs, Kingsley. During an afternoon of pulsating rugby the children attacked with a flourish and defended doggedly to record one draw and seven wins, remaining undefeated through the tournament. The spectating parents were overjoyed with the final result as were the rest of the school when they heard the good news. Congratulations to all those involved, a very memorable afternoon!

On Tuesday 9th April children in reception and key stage 1 had a special visit by Rent a Beast. Children took part in workshops learning about the minibeasts and their lifecycles. They also had the opportunity to handle the minibeast. I hope they didn’t bring one home!

Lots of fun was had by our children, as they all took part in our famous egg hunt. The children were put into teams and searched the school grounds for clues to solve our Easter puzzle. There were even mini chocolate eggs to find along the way. The victorious team received yummy chocolate rabbits and every child was given a chocolate Easter lolly. Great puzzle solving Great Wood!

Our reception children enjoy their muddy morning's in our woodland area. They enjoyed making homes for woodland creatures, out of leaves, sticks and mud, playing hide and seek, taking part in acting out a traditional tale. They then had their snack and milk whilst having a story. Great fun was had by everyone.

On Wednesday 3rd April, we were extremely fortunate to be able to take our year 6 children to the theatre to see War Horse. The children were transfixed by the mastery of the puppeteers and in awe of their performance. Our children had an amazing time and are very grateful to the National theatre who supplied the tickets.

On Thursday 21st March we were lucky enough to be visited by the Dog’s Trust. Representatives from the Dog’s Trust held science-based workshops, for our KS2 children, which took them back in time, to explore how dogs evolved into our much loved family pets. Our children discovered many types of different breeds and types of dog and reflected on animal welfare and how we care for our dogs. Our children were taught about responsible dog ownership and what dogs need. The experience was interactive, with discussions, quizzes and role play activities.
