FREE SCHOOL MEALS ELGIBILITY

FREE SCHOOL MEALS ELGIBILITY

As you know, some children are eligible for Free School Meals, depending upon a number of factors.

During this period of school closure, the provision of these lunches will continue for those families who let us know us that they wish to receive them, but as you would expect, this will be done in a different way.

As this may be a little confusing, just to clarify: all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are currently eligible for a daily school meal as part of the Government’s ‘Universal Infant Free School Meals’ initiative. This is different to ‘Free School Meals’.

Being in receipt of ‘Free School Meals’, also currently provides benefits for children when in school, and includes provision of lunch items during the school day (in term-time) during this period of closure due to the Coronavirus. To see if your child is eligible for ‘Free School Meals’ please click here and visit the 'School Dinners' section for more information. **If you have previously completed the application and your child currently receives Free School Meals (not solely as part of the 'Universal Infant Free School Meals' programme), then there is no need to reapply.

A Fantastic Community Gift!

Thanks to a very generous gift from a local community group of bookworms the school has been able to purchase some books for the school library. This helps promote our love for reading and ensuring that pupils are reading for pleasure with some great book titles, from classics like The Railway Children, scary stories from Goosebumps to fun with David Walliams. This positive impact on the school comes from our close working relationship with our local community, thanks once again to all those that contributed so generously!

Boogieing Until The Bell

Pupils across school enjoyed a party to come together as they prepared to finish school earlier than expected. They played party games, danced and laughed the afternoon away. Despite the tears the children made the day enjoyable as they embarked on spending some time away from school in these unprecedented times.

Mothers look set to be surprised this year as pupils buy and then wrap gifts for their mums. From a variety of gifts, pupils could make up gift collections and then wrap them in preparation for Mothering Sunday. Thank you to those who supported the event and we hope you all have a lovely day in which mums are pampered and given at least one day off!

Top 1% of schools for the third year in a row!

Pupils and staff are celebrating after receiving a letter from the Minister of State to congratulate it for being in the top 1% of schools in the country for the third year in succession.

Great Wood Primary School received the letter following 100% of pupils attaining at, or exceeding, the National Expected Level in Mathematics and Writing in the 2019 end-of-Key Stage 2 assessments.

The letter advised that the results once again placed the school in the top 1% of schools in the country. This followed a similar letter received by the school for being placed in the top 1% of schools in 2018 and 2017, and also the top 3% in 2016.

Characters Come To Life!

Our amazing Great Wood children came to school today transformed for World Book Day!  Every child came dressed as a character from their favourite book, we were visited by Harry Potter, Hermione, Wally, Matilda, Fantastic Mr Fox, Captain America and Mary Poppins, to name but a few.  Everyone was kept in line by The Big Bad Wolf, (who we believe may have been Mr Adamson)!

NSPCC - Our Right To Be Safe!

Our fantastic children went to two dedicated assemblies, delivered by the NSPCC. They told the children how to stay safe and who to talk to if they have any worries.  The assemblies reinforce the NSPCC’s campaign ‘speak out! Stay safe!’  We have incorporated these brilliant assemblies as part of our commitment to safe guarding our amazing children and giving them the tools to keep safe!  We would like to extend a huge thank you to the NSPCC team.
