In Year Six this half term, the children have been learning about the ‘Impacts of the World Wars’ on British society. They have used their historical knowledge of the wars and merged this with their RE and Art studies to produce some magnificent candle designs to symbolise the end of the war - as Britain came out of the darkness into the light. The children created candles, using henna cones filled with acrylic paint, which were inspired by the designs they saw having visited the amazing car-van on site and to celebrate the contribution of the Indian sub continent in the war effort. As you can see they thoroughly enjoyed this whole experience and the final creations were extremely impressive. Well done Year 6, excellent work!

On Monday the 14th December the panto came to Great Wood, oh yes it did! Our children were transported to theatre land. They travelled with Jack up the beanstalk to tackle the giant and win the day. There were lots of hoorays and boos as the children got into the spirit of panto! It was a delight to see the happy smiling faces as a bit of ‘normal’ came to school. (All covid guidelines were adhered to for the performances).

Year Six had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a variety of Christmas crafts to aid their understanding of the true meaning of Christmas. Activities were planned by Mark Hatcher, a friend of the school and member of the local Methodist church. The pupils enjoyed quizzes, craft making and learning about Advent. As you can see they loved getting sticky and messy and the final creations were superb, thank you Mark for those wonderful ideas and provision of resources.

Great Wood have gone red and green to help raise money for The Alzheimer’s Society! Our amazing children have come cheeky elves for the day, wearing their best elf clothes. Each child has made a donation to the Alzheimer’s charity, to support those who need it. Red, green and candy canes have filled the school with Christmas spirit whilst helping an extremely worthy cause. Well done Great Wood!

Great Wood raised money to support Children in Need. Our children (and staff) dressed in spots, bright colours and Pudsey onesies, to raise funds for the extremely worthwhile campaign. In addition to dressing up, Lesley and Jan made Pudsey biscuits. We would like to thank all of our Great Wood family for your generosity and kindness. Your fantastic support will enable many children, who really need our help, to receive the assistance they are desperate for.

Our year 3 children have been helping our birds, as part of their science work. Children were asked to bring in a plastic bottle, which they then converted to bird feeders! They filled their amazing, handmade, bird-feeders with nuts and seeds. Next they put their fantastic creations around the school grounds, for our birds to enjoy. Excellent work year 3!
