Pupils in Reception and KS1 are exploring the world of construction by using their imagination to build and create, using a range of materials. By working together, sharing, talking about ideas and planning ahead they are building a variety of constructions. A great start to introducing them to the world of engineering, all while having fun.

Pupils are keeping themselves fit and healthy by trying to run a mile in under ten minutes. Pupils are encouraged to walk, jog and run and see how many laps of the playground they can do in 10 minutes. To complete the mile they must do 22 laps! As the year goes on we will hopefully see progress and spot our future cross country athletes.

Open the Book returned to school today and Reverend Joe Cant had plenty of lively ways to bring The Bible to life. Joe was joined by members of the Christ Church congregation to bring music, drama and fun to bible stories. This one was especially lively due to the assembly members being splashed with water. The pupils enjoy these assemblies and we are excited to have the ‘Open the Book’ team back throughout the year.

Voting took place across the whole school to elect our captain and vice-captains for this academic year. Speeches were prepared and the candidates stood in front of their electorate to make their pledges of office. After some fine, moving speeches the colour teams were taken to the voting booths to cast their vote. In lots of cases the voting was close, in some cases by one vote. When the votes were read out all the candidates shook hands and celebrated each other’s successes. We are very proud as a school to present our new captains and vice-captains for the year. They are looking forward to representing the school as a role model and ambassador.

We are joining the strider scheme at Great Wood. Supporting walking to school. This is to reduce congestion at the school gates, whilst helping the environment and reducing our carbon footprint. For each time your child walks to school they will get a point. The number of points equates to how many badges your child can collect, each month. As a school we are supporting this initative for a year, but hopefully the new habit will stick. Join strider and stride out to school.

The academic year may have come to the close but pupils, parents and staff ended in a wonderful celebration as the school hosted its fifth year of the PTFA Camp Out. Tents packed on to the school field and fun was had by all, even the weather couldn’t dampen spirits as the pupils embraced the great outdoors. Families relaxed, played cricket, rounders and football. Thank you to all those that helped out with either serving the brilliant cooked breakfasts, tuck shop, ice cream stall and even doughnuts at elevenses or just helped with the tidy up. Pupils led the tidy up and even sorted out the recycling. After two nights of quality family time and no technology, families made their way home and everyone could enjoy a well deserved break until September.

Families of our wonderful year six leavers came together to attend a lively and enjoyable Leavers Service. Pupils reflected on their time at Great Wood and talked about the next part of their life journey! Children sang, told jokes, played recorders (always a favourite?) and were awarded trophies and presents as part of the service. It was all finished with a mass dance to Queen and the Gummy Bear song. A brilliant finale for our wonderful year six pupils, good luck and all the best to all of them.
