Keith Hollins

Keith Hollins

It is with sadness that we learnt of the passing of Keith Hollins, former Headteacher and Executive Principal of The Cheadle Academy and Westwood College (amongst others), and CEO of the Staffordshire University Academies Trust.

Keith kindly offered advice and support as we formed The Moorlands Primary Federation and through his co-founding of the South Moorlands Schools Learning Community, created many positive opportunities for schools throughout our area.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

We Welcome Parking Buddies To Great Wood

To help keep our children safe and solve an on-going issue, we have invested in our own Parking Buddies.  Our vibrant children and giraffe will be on duty by the zig zags outside school.  They are designed to deter people from parking illegally on the yellow zig zags and to keep our children safe.

We welcome our parking buddies to our Great Wood family and hope that everyone will respect them.

Raising Money By Being Us!

Our Great Wood children dressed in their favourite own clothes, on Friday 24th September and gave a donation to Macmillan.  In the afternoon they enjoyed biscuits and juice – with waitress service from the staff!

Although this was a different type of fundraiser from our traditional coffee afternoon, we didn’t let the current situation stop us!  We raised an amazing £194.40, well done everyone and thank you for you fantastic support, as always.

England Are Our Champions!

Great Wood celebrated England’s amazing achievements of reaching the Euro 2020 Finals this year.  Although we didn’t win this time, it is the first time in 55 years that England have achieved this.  Great Wood are very proud or our fantastic team.  We have all worn England shirts, red and white, or football strips, to show our support and celebrate with our great football team.

Well done, England! We are proud of you!

Big Weekend of Jabs for Staffordshire

Big Weekend of Jabs for Staffordshire

People in Staffordshire are being encouraged to get their Covid-19 vaccine during a Big Weekend of walk-in vaccinations.

The national NHS push to get as many people as possible vaccinated against Covid-19 will take place from Saturday 26 to Monday 28 June at various sites across Staffordshire.

All sites will be offering first doses to people aged 18 or over without the need to book an appointment.

Some sites will also offer second doses to people over 40, health and care workers, unpaid carers and people at higher clinical risk, from eight weeks after their first dose.

Cabinet Support Member for Public Health and Integrated Care, Dr Johnny McMahon, urged all adults who haven’t received their vaccine to take full advantage of the walk-ins.

Johnny said:

“Whatever big plans people may have this weekend, I’d urge anybody eligible and still waiting to get their vaccine to take advantage of the NHS Big Weekend. This is an absolutely fantastic opportunity to speed up the vaccination programme in Staffordshire and get more adults their first dose, and get eligible groups fully vaccinated.

"The sooner everyone is vaccinated the sooner we can begin to look to a future where we can live with this virus without the need for restrictions on our lives and freedoms."

Vaccination sites will include Stafford’s Kingston Centre, the Pirelli Stadium in Burton-on-Trent, Whitemoor Lakes in Lichfield and a number of GP practices and other sites.

A full list of the walk-in Staffordshire sites, dates and times can be found on the NHS Midlands and Lancashire CSU website.

The NHS have a tool on their website to help people find their nearest walk-in vaccination site.

Anyone who has already booked an appointment for a first or second jab should stick with the appointment. People can also book an appointment through the national booking system online or by calling 119.

Children Cycle for Their Smoothies!

On Tuesday 15th June our children have enjoyed a visit from the smoothie bike.  The bike mixes smoothie ingredients, by being powered by our children cycling. The children chose their ingredients and then took turns to mix the smoothie, by pedalling to power the mixer.  When the smoothies was ready our children enjoyed a healthy, tasty drink as a reward for all their hard work! There were a lot of happy, if sticky, smiling faces. Of course, all covid restrictions were adhered to during this activity.

Great Wood Receive A Canine Visitor

Great Wood Receive A Canine Visitor

Great Wood receives a canine visitor.  Last week, we had a special visitor at Great Wood, to celebrate Dogs Trust Day.  Herbie (Mrs York’s gorgeous Golden Retriever) came to school to see our children.  Each class watched an online presentation, containing important information to keep dogs happy.  The children learned to leave dogs alone when they are resting, not to hug but to stroke our canine friends, not to disturb a dog when it is eating and not to take a toy off a dog, but to get an adult.  After the presentation, Herbie arrived in each classroom, where the children were given the opportunity to talk to and stoke our fabulous canine friend.

The children (and Herbie) thoroughly enjoyed the activity and asked if Herbie could visit school every day!
