Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is additional funding allocated to all schools to support a targeted number of pupils. The Moorlands Primary Federation receives Pupil Premium funding for: children that are 'cared for' or 'adopted from care'; children whose parents are in the armed forces; and for every child who is receiving Free School Meals (not including those who only receive free school meals as part of the Government’s ‘Universal Infant Free School Meals’ scheme), or has been recorded as receiving Free School Meals at any point in the past six years.

How can I find out if my child is entitled to Pupil Premium funding under the Free School Meals criteria?

Your child may be eligible for Free School Meals - and therefore Pupil Premium funding - if you receive any of the following:

  • Income Support;
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance;
  • Support under Part VI of the immigration and Asylum Act 1999;
  • The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit;
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you are not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of more than £16,190);
  • Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit);
  • Universal credit.

The process for applying is straightforward and confidential. You can check online using the 'Free School Meals/Pupil Premium Service' by clicking here. This website will enable you to enter key information and link this to the Department for Education system to check eligibility, giving you an immediate ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response, and will notify the relevant school. Alternatively, you can speak to a member of our office team by calling 01538 702355 (option 4) and choosing the appropriate option for your school. All enquiries will be treated sensitively.

Children in Reception and KS1 are automatically entitled to Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM); however, registering your child for Free School Meals (as above) will entitle them to additional support within school – UIFSM does not.

How is the funding used?

Across The Moorlands Primary Federation, we aim to use Pupil Premium funding effectively for the benefit of the individual child. We recognise that barriers to learning take a variety of forms and look at different ways to support each child in their learning journey. Any child that is in receipt of Pupil Premium funding, will be given opportunities to develop and improve their achievement, whether this is to close gaps within learning, or to stretch more able pupils with wider learning opportunities. This may be offered in one-to-one or small group intervention sessions, or within the classroom setting. Members of staff work together to identify targets for individual children and groups and the impact of these interventions is monitored closely.

The funding may also be used to enable children eligible for Pupil Premium funding, to access educational visits and curriculum enrichment opportunities.
